Wieskirche

The Wieskirche church in the Pfaffenwinkel is easily accessible from us, and the 40-minute drive past the royal castles alone is an experience. The rococo pilgrimage church "Zum gegeißelten Heiland auf der Wies" was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1984. In the landscape between the rivers Lech, Ammer and Loisach, the southern Ammersee and the southern end of Lake Starnberg up to the Ammergau mountains, churches and monasteries are closer together than anywhere else, explaining the term "Pfaffenwinkel" with benevolent respect:

The Welfenmünster of the former Premonstratensian monastery in Steingaden, which commissioned the construction of the Wieskirche in the 18th century, the former monastery church in Rottenbuch, the monastery village of Polling, which was awarded the Europa Nostra Prize for special services to cultural heritage, the Romanesque basilica in Altenstadt, the Wessobrunn monastery with the Wessobrunner Prayer and the numerous small, beautifully decorated village churches are also worth a visit with their many sacred sights.

Royal castles

World-famous: the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Both castles are only a few kilometers away from the town center of Füssen and attract over 1.5 million visitors every year. A visit to the castle is already a highlight in summer, and in winter it is a very special experience. The horse-drawn carriage ride up to Neuschwanstein Castle is the best tip for romantics. Our guests can also reach Hohenschwangau Castle in less than half an hour. The Museum of the Bavarian Kings also allows visitors to experience the history of the Wittelsbach dynasty up close.

Rottenbuch Monastery

The Rottenbuch monastery and the canons based there determined ecclesiastical and secular life in the Ammertal and Werdenfelser Land until secularization in 1803. The basilica style of the church, which was built soon after its foundation, has been preserved, and despite changes in the 18th century, the medieval spatial concept still remains.

Unusual for the Bavarian region is the construction of an intersecting transept and the exposure of the tower. The frescoes in the interior are among Matthäus Günther's best works. The lavish stucco work seems to supersede all other architectural forms; the idea of Bavarian church rococo is perfectly realized. The trip to the monastery along the romantic road can be perfectly combined with a visit to the Wieskirche church, Ettal monastery or the castles.

Ettal Monastery

Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian founded the Benedictine monastery of Ettal in 1330 and the church was completed in 1370 after 40 years of construction. The pious vow foundation was linked to practical purposes, such as securing traffic routes, developing the area and establishing foundations. In 1710, the Ettal monastery functioned as a knights' academy and was one of the most important secondary schools of the time. After a major fire and destruction, the monastery complex is redesigned by the court architect Enrico Zucalli to the form it still has today.

The central building with its 12-sided floor plan impresses above all with its outstanding stucco decoration by Johann Baptist Zimmermann and Johann Georg Üblherr as well as the ceiling fresco. The sacristy, painted by J. J. Zeiller in 1747, is still considered the most beautiful rococo sacristy in southern Germany.

Zugspitze

At 2,962 m, the Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany and one of the Alps' prime viewing mountains. In good weather, you can enjoy the 4-country view of the two- and three-thousand-meter peaks - and the only four-thousand-meter peak in the Eastern Alps.

You can reach the summit directly from Ehrwald with the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn. Even the ascent in the 100-passenger panoramic cabins is an experience. You glide almost silently up the mountain, overcoming a height difference of 1,725 m in just 10 minutes.

If you want to enjoy the distant winter views while skiing, the Zugspitzplatt is the place to be. The altitude and the glacier guarantee snow throughout the winter season.

You can also get to the Zugspitze from Garmisch-Partenkirchen: either by taking the train first or directly from Eibsee with the Zugspitzbahn, which opened in 2018.
